Everyone knows that you simply cannot beat tube amp when it comes to performance, reliability, raw power and sound quality. But everyone also knows that tube amps don’t come cheap, so if you want a quality model at an affordable price, you’ll have to do some digging and hard research.
We’re glad to say that we’ve done the homework and proudly single out the Mesa Boogie Lonestar as one of the best tube amps available at an affordable price. The looks, the power, the price tag – the mix is very well balanced, keeping the company’s reputation as one of the top manufacturers of its niche. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves a little bit, so check out the Mesa Boogie Lonestar Special review in full below.
Mesa Boogie Lonestar Special Features
The amp features two entirely independent input channels, each equipped with Gain, Treble, Mid, Bass, Presence, Reverb and Master Volume controls to ensure extra tonal adjustments. Also packed in the mix is a first class, all-tube long spring reverb with an included Bright and Warm reverb tone switch. The amp has a fully buffered FX loop with a send level control which can be implemented over all input channels when turned on.
The Pure Class A, multi-watt channel assignable power amp technology allows the user to assign either one, two or as much as four power tubes to each of the channels for specific power ratings of five, 15 or 30 Watts per input channel via independent 5, 15, and 30 Watt power switches. The deal also includes a true “hard” bypass switch that allows you to remove the FX loop, output level, and solo level controls from the signal’s path.
If you want a brief description, we’ll just say that this one delivers classic tube amp sound. Roaring, strong, organic and natural, it’s a real pleasure to hear this baby purr. The 30 watt power mark is more than enough to have your back covered during every show, jam session or house practice.
The thing with tube amps is that they work best when cranked to 11, and you can’t have the amp in such state at all times. There are neighbors, other musicians and much more factors to consider. But with the power-ratings switch, you’ll be able to adjust like a chameleon and capable of tearing it up every time under every circumstances.
What we like
We like quite a few factors about this amp. We like the rich sound, so distinctive for Mesa Boogie. The power, the wall-of-sound kind of vibe, this one is bound to be loved by every fan of blues, rock and heavy metal out there. We absolutely love the vintage looks, and the light weight that makes the amp very portable and easy to transport.
On the good side, we should also mention the versatility. The amp is capable of covering not just a vast array of genres and musical styles, but also many surroundings and environments thanks to the power ratings switch. Durability level is also very high, and with proper maintenance and regular tube checks, it will last you pretty much forever.
What we don’t like
We should always point out a few down sides to a product so the review doesn’t seem like a raving praise, but this item really has a few down sides. It is one of the best items of its niche – strong, versatile, and powerful – and even the price is very fair, so if we have to jot down a downer, we’ll just say that these seem to be a bit hard to find these days. Therefore, if you stumble upon one of the Mesa Boogie Lonestars and you need a great tube amp, don’t hesitate to buy it, they’ll be gone quicker than you think!
If a distinctive Mesa Boogie sound in a compact, versatile package is what you need, this is the item you’ve been yearning for. With a vast array of power and sonic options, this amp has your back covered for just about any gig, jam session or house practice. Enrich your musical expression with a taste of tube power, get yourself a dose of Boogie! Highly recommended.
